Ryan Grimes Chooses Cowher to Lead Atlanta
3/9/09 Atlanta, GA - Atlanta's new football team has a new football coach. And although he may be new to the Atlanta scene, he's been around the NML for quite sometime.
Today Falcons' owner Ryan Grimes announced that he had chosen Bill Cowher to be the teams new head coach. Cowher was recently fired by the Carolina Panthers after they had their worst season in franchise history.
"I am glad to be back coaching again. I look forward to this chance to take the Falcons to the Power Bowl," said Cowher at the press conference.
Atlanta Draft: No Picks
4/21/10 Atlanta, GA - While the Falcons showed some signs of promise in the the 2009 season, they were few and far between. There was not a more sporadic team in the league. You never knew what Falcons team was going to show up on Saturday which frustrated both Coach Cowher and fans alike. So what can the countless followers in Atlanta expect from the "Dirty Birds" this coming season?
First the Falcons have decided to take a new approach when it comes to the offseason. Most teams look forward to the draft and filling in holes with younger talent from the college ranks. Owner Ryan Grimes has decided to instead trade away those picks for proven veterans. This might not be a bad way to go. There is no guarantee that a rookie will ever pan out in the NML, but the veteran who has played for awhile in the higher level can be judged as to how he will play for another team.
So given this approach Grimes and Cowher have traded away ALL of their draft picks. This is
unprecedented. The only picks the team will have are compensatory picks after the main draft.
So who did they get for their 2010 picks? The first trade was with the new expansion team Tennessee Titans. Atlanta sent last year's top pick WR Darius Heyward-Bey and their 5th round pick to the Titans for QB Jason Campbell. This is probably going to be a good deal for the Falcons as Delhomme didn't fair so well with Atlanta last season.
Their second trade involved a monster of a deal that sent the rest of the remaining picks to Dallas along with Delhomme and Orlando Pace for WR Greg Jennings, LB Jonathan Vilma, SS Tanard Jackson, and CB Carlos Rogers. A further analysis of this trade shows that the Falcons did extremely well. They picked up 4 "sure thing" players that are proven stars for what would have amounted to 6 unproven players (and let's face it probably only 2 or 3 would have been even decent in the NML) and two aging players who've lost their touch. Atlanta wins. The challenge will now be to see how where these new additions can take this team in 2011. Their first game is at Pittsburgh on September 11; it will be a great gauge as to whether the right deals were done.
