A Bad Offseason for Philly?
3/29/10 Philadelphia, PA - With the draft less than a month a way, there may be a new, unexpected team looking for a quarterback. The Philadelphia Eagles who have been so dominant in regular season play and won the Sammy Baugh Trophy two years ago might have to adjust to life without QB Ben Roethlisberger. Currently the Philadelphia quarterback is under investigation concerning
charges or rape and if found guilty would be headed to prison.
So what are the Eagle's choices for quarterback right now on the roster? Daunte Culpepper who used to be the face of this franchise until Big Ben showed up might not be a bad fill in, but he is aging and definetly not a long term solution. The other QB on roster is Derek Anderson who might also do well depending. He really hasn't had that much of a chance in this league and therefore would be an unknown.
The Eagles could also fill the need through the draft, but might be unlikely due to the fact that they have a lower pick and so many other teams ahead of them
need quarterbacks.
Tim Tebow is said to be a lower 2nd round pick, but in reality he will end up going to someone in the 1st round who needs a quarterback and is willing to take the chance on a player who was a great college star. Perhaps Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour would be a good choice as someone who could grow into a
starting role in a year or two. His biggest challenge, like so many college QB's, is that he's used to the spread offensive system that few NML teams play.
Besides quarterback, the Eagles could use a guard and a free safety with the latter being most needed.
If they go with guard for their first pick or even second, their only choice would most likely be Jon Asamoah from Illinois. While he may be considered undersized, his athleticism and speed make up for lack of power. He'd be a great steal for the Eagles 2nd round pick.
As for the free safety position the Eagles have a few choices they could go with. The obvious choices are Tennesse's Eric Berry and USC's Taylor Mays if either are there come the 23rd pick. If not the Eagles have the luxury of either waiting for a later round to fill this need or taking South Florida's Nate Allen. Allen's upsides include his on the field instincts and he is in shape, ready to play. A couple of problems with Nate would lie in the man-to-man coverage in which he sometimes can flounder, especially in the NML level.
The 2010 season will be a defining year for the Philadelphia Eagles. One in which they could lose their star quarterback and find themselves in unfamiliar territory: losing. If last year's season was any indication than perhaps that slide has already started. If that is to be the case Bill Belichick might be sent packing by season's end.
